Why slab leaks turn up across the high desert
Practically everything built in the Antelope Valley sits on a slab poured directly on the ground. Basements are not part of the building stock here, so supply plumbing that would run through a lower level elsewhere is cast into the concrete or buried in the fill under it. What happens to that concrete over the years happens to the pipe inside it.
The ground under the valley is not uniform. Alluvial fan material, old lakebed and a caliche hardpan at varying depth sit next to one another, so a slab can bear on cemented hardpan at one corner and soft fill at another. Toward Palmdale and the southern foothills there are clays that swell on winter rain and shrink back through the dry months. A slab riding that unevenly works the lines running through it, and copper thins where it bends. Add groundwater carrying a heavy mineral load, working on the same copper from the inside, and the result owes more to the ground and the water than to the age of the house.
What a slab leak looks like from inside the house
A slab leak rarely announces itself the way a burst line does. The water has no open path, so it saturates the fill under the concrete first and only then surfaces through a crack, a joint or the slab edge. By the time anything is visible it has usually been running for weeks.

Locating the leak before anything is opened
The floor is not opened to look for the leak. It is opened once the leak has been found. The sequence runs: isolate the supply system and confirm the loss is on a pressurised line rather than a drain; pressure test hot and cold separately to establish which side is failing; then work acoustic listening equipment across the floor to pick up water escaping under the concrete, with thermal imaging showing where a hot line is warming the slab. Drain failures hold no pressure, so they leak only while the fixture above runs, and are found by camera instead.
Repair in place or reroute overhead
Once the location is known there are two routes. The slab can be opened at that point: flooring lifted, concrete cut out, the pipe repaired, then the slab patched and the floor reinstated. That keeps the existing layout and suits a system that is otherwise sound.
Alternatively the failed run is abandoned in place and a new line installed overhead, up a wall, across the attic and back down to the fixture. The concrete is never opened. In valley housing this comes up often, because attics here already carry supply lines to rooftop coolers and air handlers. The trade is that an attic run needs insulating against the winter nights, since a line up there meets a cold that a line in the slab never sees.
Drying a slab after the leak is stopped
Stopping the leak does not dry the house. Concrete takes on water and gives it back slowly, and the fill beneath the slab can hold a great deal that keeps migrating upward long after the pipe is fixed. Caliche makes that worse: a cemented layer under the slab does not let water drain away downward, so it stays in the fill and travels sideways instead. Flooring laid over the area traps it, and a floating plank floor lets water spread underneath while the surface stays convincingly dry underfoot.
Drying a slab loss therefore runs longer than the same volume of clean water in a house with a wood floor structure, and the dry outdoor air the valley is known for does nothing for water sealed under a floor. Flooring is often lifted at the perimeter so airflow can reach the concrete. Wall bases are checked with a meter rather than by eye, because water crossing a slab enters the wall at the tack strip and climbs into the drywall from below. Material too wet to dry in place comes out instead: carpet padding almost always, the bottom band of drywall often, and cabinet toe kicks.
